Rehabilitation Journey
Pre - Operation encompasses controlling acute inflammation, maintaining joint Range of Motion and maintaining Muscle strength in anticipation of future operation.
Post Discharge from Primary Physiotherapist care, typically 2-3 months after most Musculoskeletal Operations.
Aim is to increase Range of Motion, Muscle Strength / Mass and progress to Activities of Daily Living (ADL).
Activities of Daily Living (ADL) includes getting patient / client back to normal functional status after operation.
E.g. Climbing stairs after a knee surgery.
Going beyond normal functions such as climbing stairs to progressively harder exercises such as lunges, which is a stationary exercise which can be scaled progressively with additional weights or difficulty.
Muscular Endurance is more pronounce in activities that lasts for more than 120 seconds, measurable with a lower Resting Heart Rate or a quicker turnaround / recovery from strenuous exercise.
Taking things up a notch, it is an expression of strength done in a quick, rapid succession under absolute control without any signs of muscle compensation or form degradation.
Preparing an athlete / patient for movements that occur on field, spontaneous landing and rebounding, absorbing external forces, change in directions are hallmarks of an athlete's ability to perform when it matters , all translates to agility and explosiveness.
E.g. Bodyweight Jump Squat involves absorbing the weight of the body only without any additional weight.
Progressing beyond just bodyweight, we will be training with an external load to challenge the motor coordination even further, to absorb larger force (more than just bodyweight)
E.g. Barbell Jump Squat involves absorbing both the weight of the body and barbell.
Proof is in the pudding! With diligent work and months of preparation, we finally get back to our goal of being ski ready by the following season! Kudos for all the blood, sweat and tears! It's all worth it from the expression!
